Makerbee Lab has been partnering with a local community organization to develop sustainable electronic wheelchairs. The goal is to create designs that allow for easy replacement and disassembly of electronic parts. This will limit the downtime needed to repair wheelchairs when broken and reduce the environmental impact of e-waste and shipping materials. By using modular components, worn or damaged parts can be swiftly swapped out, extending the lifespan and reducing the environmental impact of production. This community-driven project aims to improve accessibility and reduce the disability equipment tax. It also hopes to promote sustainability by setting a new standard for environmentally responsible product design in mobility aids.
